SHIRLEY ON PADDY'S DAY

BINGO: 17 FEBRUARY 2013

Love is a many splendour'd thing. Or so they say. I don't know what exactly a "splendoured" thing is. My guess:  Something that's low in actual sugar but high in Xylitol or Aspertame or some sugar replacement. That's all good if you have Type Read more

Small Packages

This year the GAZE film festival celebrates its 20th year. There was already a hugely successful festival in August, which celebrated the diversity of the LGBT community with some amazing films. Of course, you might have missed that, so… the nice folks at GAZE have arranged a “Best of…” event in December to give you a second chance viewing of four of the best loved films from the event.

Those films are Wish Me Away, Keep The Lights On, Vito and The Perfect Family, which you can see is quite the diverse selection. ‘Something for everybody’ as the cashier in the Boilerhouse likes to say.

You can get further information and buy tickets here.

You cannot be a princess!

Here’s your dilemma: As Madonna once foretold, you secretly would love to know what if feels like to be a girl… and Halloween is your big chance… but your evil Mom won’t let you be a Princess.

Lord knows, we’ve all been there. Our harmless piece of fun (or private business) has the capacity to make somebody else  have to think (for a second)  – and therefore must be stomped out.

This slightly depressing US clip shows the intellectual cartwheels mothers perform to maintain the ‘gender binary’… and ruin their son’s big day. (There’s also a girl who wants to be Spiderman, and those arguments look even weaker, but the evil Moms can’t help trying to enforce their notions of gender). It’s all to prevent bullying, don’t ya know.

Well here’s a newsflash: It’s actually the mothers who are doing the ‘bullying’. Stop crushing their spirit, assholes.

And, here’s another thing, don’t acknowledge  that “A Spiderman is only for one time. A princess you can be for 24 hours of the day!” and expect me not to want the costume version of the everlasting gobstopper. Gah, parents are stupid.

Let them eat Cake

My friend Michelle, who runs the glorious Cake Café off Wexford Street in Dublin (as well as running a busy social life), has written a cookery book. It’s a labour of love and it is going to arrive (like all great banquets)  in cleverly arranged courses. First up, of course(!), is cakes and the Cake Café Bake Book.

The idea is to fund it through FUND IT and the campaign has only been online a couple of DAYS and it is nearly funded already… So if you’d like to get your hands on the Cake Café Bake Book as designed by AMI/Pantibar graphic designer Niall Sweeney, throw some cash their way pronto. This is gonna be a collector’s item fo’ shure!

As a teaser, here is a short video we made to show you how easy it is to bake a sponge cake – and it only needs THREE ingredients (and parental permission to touch an oven).

Amazing Gaze

Dizzy is very busy working at the amazing 2012 Gaze Film Festival – the French say her popcorn is unpassable! – so here’s a shot of her with me at one of our more well paid gigs. Before they paid us, natch.

Do remember to drop in and see some of the great gay films they have on offer over the bank holiday weekend. It runs until Monday evening. So what, I hear you ask, is a gay film? What is your favourite gay film? I doubt if I know:

Incidentally (and totally incidentally), who’s that stupid gay who thinks Y Tu Mama Tambien is the same film as Todo Sobre Mi Madre? (Actually, I’ve made the same mistake myself!)

BURN BABY BURN

A mother in the US is getting a whole lot of heat for taking her 5 year old daughter tanning on sunbeds. And yes, before you ask, people actually still do that. This lady clearly does it waaaay too much. Anyone who thinks that looks attractive is a danger to children, in my book! Hey lady, your daughter is a ginger. She’s practically allergic to daylight! You have no business bringing her within a block of a tanning salon.

Check out the leather-faced mother’s insane interview here (Flash):

My favourite part: “That’s not normal!”. I think the tan-lady protests too much!

Congratulations to Marconi, who came to Bingo last night for the craic and took home our rolling jackpot prize of €1500! Marconi is from Brazil – isn’t everybody these days? – and he’s a regular at the show so if you didn’t get a chance to mug him (or become his temporary lover until his funds run out) then you could maybe bump into him again next week… My guess is that he’ll prolly have the cash spent by then. Happy Shopping Marconi!

Our Snowball (so called because it grows as it rolls over) will start back at €500 next week and there are other prizes up for grabs too.
