The scores please… WEEK ONE of The Drag Academy Cup climaxed at Bingo in The George on Sunday. The two Houses (Wardrobe Malfunction and No Fixed Abode) took to the stage to earn points and had the theme LOVE to guide them. Their performances were evaluated by the regular mentors and some of the audience, which included TV3′s Family Fortunes presenter Alan Hughes, Eurovision winner Niamh Kavanagh and some girl whom I renamed Mundy. Points were awarded (and deducted) using the criteria Originality, Presentation and Performance.

Those Gay, Gay Homophobes! Over the past few years, many American homophobes have turned out to be closet case gays and Jonathan Mann has written a song about it.

Jonathan makes a new music video every day for his YouTube channel. Jaysis! That’s industrious.

ACADEMY CUP KICKS OFF

This Sunday (8 January 2011), the under-draguates™ from Drag Academy will begin battling out in The Academy Cup. The idea is that they demonstrate the various skills they have developed over the past months, mainly the skill of taking out all your rage on another drag queen. The competition off-stage is going to be fierce. Here’s hoping there’s not too much bloodshed. To stop it getting too vicious, the under-draguates™ have been split into two Houses, which will compete against each other for points. It’s kinda like the Jets and the Sharks in West Side Story but with mascara and wigs instead of flick-knives and the Jerome Robbins choreography. (What do you mean you’ve never seen West Side Story?!)

THEME: Love

LOVE. It’s probably the easiest theme you could get. The word LOVE is probably in every second song you know. Your challenge is not to find an appropriate SONG but instead to find a way to bring the theme to life. You don’t have much time so get moving!

Solo choices are easy. The Group performance requires communicating with your group and coming up with a plan and rehearsing. Remember you are being scored based on your originality, creativity, presentation and performance.

It should be fun too. I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

A creative plague on both your houses!

Love Hate Sex Magic

Four weeks. Four assignments.

Each week, you need to prepare one SOLO performance and one GROUP performance based on that week’s theme. The themes are abstract and vague so they are easy to come up with a performance to match them. Get creative!

  • WEEK ONE: Love
  • WEEK TWO: Hate
  • WEEK THREE: Sex
  • WEEK FOUR: Magic

You’ll be judged based on creativity (10%), originality (10%), presentation (30%) and performance (50%). (See below for an explanation of these terms)

Remember, you are working as a team so SHARE ideas and PLAN among yourselves! That’s how you’ll succeed. Points will be awarded to your house as totals – we won’t reveal the individual scores.

When you have chosen your song, YOU MUST CLAIM IT by telling me. I will not reveal your choice to the other house but I will tell them a song is unavailable if they try to claim it. (If they do try to claim it, this obviously says something about the originality of your choice!)

Finally, you are not trying to surprise me, so feel free to ask for advice, help or stuff!

GOOD LUCK!

Creativity and Originality relate to how unique and entertaining your IDEAS are.

Presentation refers to how you use make-up, costume, props and staging to DELIVER your ideas.

Performance refers to what actually happens ON STAGE. Were your ideas a success? Were they entertaining? How did the audience react?
