On Location: High Cross/Tall Tale

Christian joke: Who was the best comedian in the Bible? Samson. He brought the house down. (Boom!)

This is Monasterboice. Before Butlins was built nearby (at Mosney), people came from all over Ireland to visit. Now, like Mosney, this place is a decaying reminder of things past.

Known as Tall Cross, the 9th century St Muiredach’s High Cross at Monasterboice, Co. Louth, is the tallest in Ireland and displays the largest number of panels of figure sculpture on any High Cross. In sandstone, it stands over 5.5m in height at a monastery site founded by St. Buithe. It is regarded as the finest high cross in the whole of Ireland. It is named after an abbot, Muiredach mac Domhnaill, who died in 923 and features biblical carvings of both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. The North and West crosses are also fine examples of this kind of structure, but these have suffered much more from the effects of the weather.
